Ondo InsurTech PLC (LSE:ONDO) may have reached a pivotal moment in its growth, with strong indications that a recent pilot agreement has led to a substantial expansion opportunity for the AIM-listed fintech.
On Tuesday, the company announced that Nationwide Mutual, one of America’s largest insurers, will roll out Ondo’s LeakBot water leak detection device across 16 US states.
The decision follows a successful initial tie-up with the Fortune 100 group and a significant step forward in Ondo’s US expansion strategy.
LeakBot is a compact, smart device that clips onto a home’s main water pipe, near the stopcock and detects hidden leaks in plumbing systems before they develop into costly issues.
Early intervention is key
The device continuously monitors water flow, sending alerts to homeowners’ smartphones if a leak is detected. This early intervention could save insurers substantial sums in cleanup and repair costs.
Water-related damage is a persistent issue, accounting for 20-30% of all insurance claims and costing £16 billion annually in the US and UK alone. LeakBot’s ability to mitigate such damage makes it a valuable tool for insurers like Nationwide.
In its latest report to investors, Ondo disclosed it has 114,000 registered customers.
In the UK, the company is partnered with NFU Mutual and also operates in Sweden and Denmark.
However, it is in the States where Ondo is seeing the strongest momentum, with five insurance carriers onboard, including Nationwide.
Big addressable market
According to Ondo’s recent presentation, these agreements create an addressable market of over 5 million homes.
Ondo’s revenue model combines a one-off fee for its technology with a recurring charge for software, services, and repairs.
This approach generates stable, annualised recurring revenue, which the company believes will prove resilient over time.
In May, Ondo raised over £4 million to accelerate its American expansion, establishing an administration and support centre and hiring staff to scale operations.
The funds are also there for new partnerships to advance LeakBot’s rollout and serve as working capital to drive growth in line with existing agreements.
The announcement of the Nationwide partnership boosted Ondo's shares by 10% on Tuesday, bringing the stock up 88% over the past month — a sign of renewed investor optimism.
Chairman optimistic
Mark Wood, chairman and an insurance industry veteran, said he was ‘delighted’ the relationship has morphed into something potentially significant for the business: "And of course, it builds on several other important contracts that we have in the US.
"I think we recently announced an increase in our production capacity, which is designed to provide the units that Nationwide will be deploying.”
Wood, former head of Prudential and Axa in the UK, expanded on the deal’s significance in an interview with Proactive’s Stephen Gunnion.
“Importantly, Nationwide is known as an innovative user of technology in insurance," he said.
"Their smart home programme is an important element of their strategy, which is what attracted them to LeakBot.
"Our product is unique worldwide and protected by global patents. Escape of water is the largest category of household claims worldwide. Every household insurer is more challenged by the escape of water than any other peril, including burglary.”
