AstraZeneca positioned for success in key breast cancer drug trials, says leading US investment bank

JP Morgan analysts see AstraZeneca PLC (LSE:AZN) in a strong position to dominate the market for a new breast cancer treatment if upcoming clinical trial results are positive.

Its drug candidate, camizestrant, or "cami", is undergoing testing in a pivotal phase III trial, named SERENA-6, aimed at treating advanced breast cancer.

Analysts expect results in mid-2025 and predict a successful outcome could secure AZ a large share of the estimated $2 billion market for advanced breast cancers with certain genetic alterations, known as ESR1 mutations.

JP Morgan believes AstraZeneca holds a strategic advantage over competitors such as Roche, thanks to cami’s formulation and a well-designed clinical trial approach.

Success in the SERENA-6 trial could also support the Anglo-Swedish giant's larger breast cancer treatment program, with other trials expected to report in 2026 and 2027.

If these results meet expectations, AstraZeneca could see significant growth in its oncology portfolio, expanding its influence in the multi-billion dollar cancer treatment market.

JPM remains 'overweight' on the stock, which it values at 14,000p. In afternoon trading, AZ shares were changing hands for 11,572.9p, down 1% on the day.
