Sintana Energy Inc (TSX-V:SEI, OTCQB:SEUSF) announced that a second exploration and appraisal campaign has commenced on blocks 2813A and 2814B, governed by Petroleum Exploration License 83 (PEL) in Namibia’s Orange Basin, in which the company holds an indirect interest.
The drill ship Santorini has arrived on site, with the Mopane 1-A well spud on October 23.
This well is the first in a planned four-well campaign aimed at evaluating the potential of the Mopane complex.
Previous exploration efforts led to multiple significant light oil discoveries, providing for an initial estimate of original oil in place of 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
Testing showed high-quality reservoir characteristics, including good porosities, high pressures, and high permeabilities in large hydrocarbon columns with low oil viscosity, which Sintana Energy said positions Mopane as “potentially an important commercial discovery.”
“We look forward to the continuing progress on PEL 83, further unveiling of the potential and quality of the Mopane complex,” Sintana Energy CEO Robert Bose commented.
“These efforts should provide additional insights into this world-class opportunity and into our broader Orange Basin portfolio located at the heart of this emerging hydrocarbon province.”
The company has an indirect 49% interest in Custos Energy which in turn owns a 10% working interest in PEL 83.
The operator of PEL 83 is a subsidiary of Galp Energia, while NAMCOR, the National Petroleum Company of Namibia, holds another 10% working interest in the license.
