The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has released the full details on its decision not to pursue a regulatory investigation into Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s $4 billion (£3 billion) investment in artificial intelligence research company Anthropic.
Amazon was given the green light from the CMA to go ahead with the deal in September.
The CMA’s full review, published today, highlighted two key points:
- Anthropic’s UK turnover falls below the £70 million threshold, and
- There is no evidence that Amazon and Anthropic collectively hold 25% or more of any market in the UK
The regulator also looked into whether the deal would give Amazon “material influence” over Anthropic.
No decision was made on this matter given the outcome of the above two points.
Amazon’s investment in Anthropic includes a $4 billion commitment, part of which is convertible into non-voting equity.
The partnership also allows Anthropic to use Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its primary cloud provider and grants Amazon access to Anthropic’s AI models for use in its services.
