AI and slower job markets hits new grads

A recent report from the Institute of Student Employers (ISE) reveals that competition for university graduate jobs has hit an all-time high.

The 2023/24 survey of 145 employers shows a 59% increase in applications per job, with employers receiving an average of 140 applications per graduate position.

This marks the highest level of competition since data collection began in 1991. The rise is attributed to a slower graduate job market, wider entry criteria, and the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in applications.

Over 1.2 million applications were submitted for fewer than 17,000 vacancies. AI is increasingly used in the recruitment process, though some employers advise against it. International students are also facing challenges due to stricter visa regulations.
