A recent study published by researchers at the Medical University of Vienna highlights promising results for detecting prostate cancer in its early stages using ANGLE PLC's (AIM:AGL, OTCQX:ANPCY) Parsortix system.
The system isolates circulating tumour cells (CTCs), which break away from a tumour and enter the bloodstream, providing a way to monitor cancer without invasive procedures.
The study examined 38 patients with both early and advanced prostate cancer. Researchers found that the Parsortix system detected CTCs in 67% of patients with localised cancer before treatment and in 77% after treatment.
This suggests that the system could help doctors monitor how well patients respond to therapy.
The study also explored the use of multiple biomarkers, or biological indicators, in the CTCs. These markers were linked to the severity and stage of the cancer, showing potential for helping doctors assess patient risk and tailor treatment more effectively.
These findings support ANGLE’s goal of using CTC profiling to guide the development of targeted cancer therapies and improve patient outcomes in clinical trials.
"This study supports our pharma services business by demonstrating how a Parsortix-enriched, CTC-based multi-marker approach can enhance the development of targeted therapies and improve patient stratification in clinical trials," said ANGLE's chief scientific officer, Karen Miller.
"This approach could ultimately lead to the development of new classes of drugs which are more targeted and provide better outcomes for patients, all of which may require a Parsortix-based companion diagnostic to support regulatory clearance."
