Google goes nuclear as it looks to power its AI revolution

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) owned Google has signed a deal with Kairos Power to use small nuclear reactors to run its energy-hungry artificial intelligence (AI) data centres.

The agreement will see Google start using the first reactor within this decade, with more planned by 2035.

Details of the deal, including cost and reactor locations, have not been disclosed.

Technology companies are increasingly turning to nuclear energy, a reliable and low-carbon power source, to meet rising electricity demands.

Google says this partnership will help meet AI’s energy needs cleanly and efficiently.

Kairos, which specialises in small reactors using molten salt as coolant, aims to demonstrate the viability of advanced nuclear energy. The plans still require approval from US regulators.
