The City of London wants to set itself up as a rival to London’s West End in new plans proposed by its governing Corporation.
As part of the Destination City initiative, the plan would see many more locations granted licences for extended hours and events.
Instead of the Square Mile being largely deserted after 7 pm as workers head home, the Corporation wants a ‘seven days a week late night destination’ full of visitors and tourists.
City of London Corporation policy chairman, Chris Hayward, said: “I am confident that this new interactive map will be an important resource for businesses and residents alike.”
“The Square Mile has experiences to cater for everyone, attracting people to spend time in the City and supporting our retail and leisure offers.”
James Tumbridge, chairman of the City’s licensing committee, added: “At the heart of this project is our strong commitment to encouraging good responsible business and investment in the City, as part of our wider ambitions for economic growth.
“The Square Mile is open for business and we are building on its success to make it a thriving destination with increased footfall and spend.”
Some 1.000 licensed premises operate in the City, added the Corporation, of which 16 have 24-hour licences with more than 300 serve open after midnight.
