Tesla's Robotaxi launch is an Apple-like 'watershed unveiling', says top tech analyst

Tesla Inc's (NASDAQ:TSLA) long-awaited Robotaxi launch is set to mark a pivotal moment for the company, with CEO Elon Musk positioning the event as a transformational step in autonomous driving.

According to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, the event, which will be held at Warner Bros. Studios in California, could be Tesla's equivalent of Apple’s iPhone launch, heralding a new era for the company. He described it as a "watershed unveiling".

Tesla’s Robotaxi will feature fully autonomous vehicles designed to compete with ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft. The cars will operate without drivers and are expected to include a new model, possibly called the "Cybercab," specifically designed for Tesla’s self-driving fleet.

The Robotaxi concept has been part of Musk’s vision for years, with promises of making Tesla cars capable of self-driving under the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) program.

Wedbush expects further updates on FSD, including improvements to its neural network technology and the introduction of new features like autonomous parking. With over 1.5 billion miles logged in Tesla’s FSD program, Wedbush believes the advancements could significantly improve vehicle autonomy.

While the technology is advancing, significant regulatory hurdles remain. Companies like Google’s Waymo and General Motors’ Cruise have faced setbacks, including the suspension of Cruise’s operations in California due to safety concerns. As Tesla pushes forward, these issues will need to be addressed to secure approvals.

Wedbush notes that the Robotaxi launch could reshape Tesla’s business model, transitioning from selling cars to offering rides.

Tesla could allow customers to rent out their vehicles when not in use, similar to Airbnb's model. However, given Musk's history of optimistic timelines, investors may approach the event cautiously if clear timelines for the rollout are not provided.

Tesla has promised to revolutionize transportation with this launch. Whether it can deliver remains to be seen, but Wedbush reiterated its “outperform” rating on Tesla stock with a $300 price target.
