OpenAI strikes content deal with Cosmopolitan owner Hearst

OpenAI has struck a deal with media conglomerate Hearst to incorporate content from its vast network of magazines and newspapers into ChatGPT.

Users of the large-language model will be presented with content from Hearst’s brands, which include Cosmopolitan, Women’sHealth, Digital Spy and dozens of local newspapers, with relevant citations and links.

“As generative AI matures, it’s critical that journalism created by professional journalists be at the heart of all AI products,” said Hearst Newspapers President Jeff Johnson.

“This agreement allows the trustworthy and curated content created by Hearst Newspapers’ award-winning journalists to be part of OpenAI’s products like ChatGPT — creating more timely and relevant results.”

OpenAI has struck numerous content deals with major global news publications including News Corp (NASDAQ:NWSA), the Financial Times and Vox Media.

Artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT and OpenAI’s in-development SearchGPT project are rapidly changing the way users search for content on the Web.

Discussing The Atlantic’s SearchGPT collaboration, chief executive Nicholas Thompson recently stated: “AI search is going to become one of the key ways that people navigate the internet, and it's crucial, in these early days, that the technology is built in a way that values, respects, and protects journalism and publishers.

“We look forward to partnering with OpenAI in the process, and creating a new way for readers to discover The Atlantic.”
