OpenAI sees leadership shakeup as CTO and two top executives depart

The OpenAI executive exodus continued this week, with three key leaders announcing their departures, including chief technology officer Mira Murati.

Pivotal role

Murati, who played a pivotal role in the development of ChatGPT and Dall-E, shared her decision on X, formerly Twitter, attributing it to a need for personal exploration.

Her departure was swiftly followed by chief research officer Bob McGrew and vice president of Research Barret Zoph, both of whom also called time with the company.

These exits follow those of OpenAI chief scientist and co-founder Ilya Sutskever in May, and co-founder John Schulman in August.

Scrutiny of governance

There is particularly close scrutiny of the governance of OpenAI by social observers, policymakers and investors alike, given the critical role and potential dangers of machine learning in the coming years, and the need to ensure its responsible stewardship.

The leadership shakeup also comes during a critical period for the company as it contemplates a restructuring aimed at increasing investor returns.

The company, originally founded as a non-profit, has been exploring new fundraising avenues, with reports suggesting a potential valuation of US$150 billion.

Murati, who had been with OpenAI for six-and-a-half years, described her time at the company as ‘an extraordinary privilege’.

She oversaw some key innovations, including the release of GPT-4o, an AI model that introduced human-like spoken interactions, and the upcoming OpenAI o1, designed to solve complex scientific and mathematical problems.

Amicable and well-coordinated

CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the impact of these departures, saying the leadership transition was amicable and well-coordinated. He thanked Murati for her contribution.

"Mira, Bob, and Barret made these decisions independently, but it made sense to do this all at once for a smooth handover," Altman said on X.

Altman has tapped Mark Chen as the new senior vice president of Research, while Josh Achiam has been appointed as the new head of mission alignment.

OpenAI’s latest series of executive exits leaves Altman without much of his original leadership team, as the company prepares to navigate this important next phase in its growth and innovation.
