eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY, ETR:EBA) has removed selling fees for private sellers across most categories in the UK, except for vehicles, as part of its strategy to compete with fast-growing rivals like Depop and Vinted.
This follows an earlier fee removal for pre-owned clothing in April, which led to a surge in listings. The move aims to increase listings while promoting sustainability by keeping items out of landfills.
Competitors such as Vinted and Depop have different fee structures, often charging buyers rather than sellers. eBay's decision, effective immediately, eliminates final value and regulatory fees.
A recent survey revealed that unused items in UK households could generate over £9 billion in resale income. eBay's fee removal has already increased seller activity in other markets like Germany.
