Market Report 27 September: ASX flat as MinRes soars and Star Entertainment plummets

Proactive's Tylah Tully gives a market wrap for the 27th of September.

The ASX remained largely flat today, with the index up 0.04% at 8,206.7 points, 15 minutes before market close. Over the past five days, the index has stayed mostly unchanged but is 0.46% below its 52-week high.

Among the top performers, Mineral Resources saw a significant surge of almost 14%, trading around $49 per share. A2 Milk Company followed closely with an 8% increase, closing at $6.25 per share.

On the downside, The Star Entertainment Group plummeted by 42%, now trading at 25 cents per share. This sharp decline was attributed to the company's announcement of a statutory net loss of $1.685 billion for FY2024, impacted by increased operating costs and a $1.7 billion tax payment.

Sector-wise, Materials performed the strongest, up 2.58%, buoyed by a rise in mining stocks as iron ore prices surpassed US$100 per tonne, driven by renewed optimism over Chinese stimulus measures.

All other sectors registered minor declines, with Healthcare leading the fallers, down 1.19%.
