OpenAI shifts control: Sam Altman to gain equity as non-profit control ends

OpenAI is reportedly planning to restructure its business into a for-profit benefit corporation, shifting control away from its non-profit board, which currently oversees the company.

According to the Reuters exclusive, the non-profit will retain a minority stake, while CEO Sam Altman is set to receive equity for the first time.

The restructured OpenAI could be valued at $150 billion, boosting its appeal to investors.

This shift comes amid leadership changes, including the departure of CTO Mira Murati.

While the restructuring aligns OpenAI with companies such as Anthropic and xAI, there are concerns over how the new governance structure may impact its commitment to AI safety, especially after the disbanding of its AI superalignment team.
