Britain could see days when electricity is free in future according to the head of one of the UK’s big five suppliers.
Matthieu Hue, chief executive of EDF Renewables, said growing supply from wind and solar meant supply would sometimes exceed demand meaning days when there are no costs for users.
Speaking at the Labour Party Conference, Hue said: “Demand is not the same every hour of the day or every day of the week.
“There are a number of companies, including EDF, that believe that electricity will be free [at some times] – perhaps on a Sunday.
“This will also be made possible through the installation of smart meters which let people see what energy they are consuming.”
Hue added households could even use electric vehicles to power their home during periods of low wind and sunlight.
EDF has around 47 renewable energy sites across the UK, including 10 onshore wind farms in Scotland, collectively producing about 2.5 gigawatts (GW), roughly enough to power 2 million homes.
Hue was recently appointed joint chairman of the Government’s Onshore Wind Task Force.
EDF has 5.2 million domestic and business UK customers.
