The US Commerce Department has proposed banning key Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles due to national security concerns, according to reports.
This move would effectively block Chinese cars and trucks from America's roads. The proposal also requires automakers to remove existing Chinese components from vehicles, citing fears of data collection and foreign control of connected cars, vans and lorries.
These prohibitions, including software and hardware from Russia, are set to take effect with the 2027 and 2030 model years, respectively.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo warned of potential threats to privacy and safety from foreign control of US vehicles.
The proposal allows Chinese manufacturers to seek exemptions, but it could force American automakers like Ford and GM to stop importing Chinese-made vehicles.
