Proactive's Tylah Tully breaks down 'Just the Facts' of Immuron Ltd (NASDAQ:IMRN, ASX:IMC)'s (Immuron Ltd (NASDAQ:IMRN, ASX:IMC)) lastest ASX announcement.
Immuron has initiated the planning for a phase two clinical trial of its drug candidate, IMM-529, following a pre-IND (Investigational New Drug) meeting with the US FDA. IMM-529 is being developed to prevent or treat Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection, a common healthcare-associated infection with significant recurrence rates.
The rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, or "superbugs," has increased the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, which can disturb gut microbiota and heighten the risk of infections like C. diff. In the US alone, over 400,000 people are affected by C. diff annually, contributing to more than 30,000 deaths.
Immuron plans to submit an investigational new drug application in the first half of next year, followed by a phase two trial. Preclinical studies have shown IMM-529’s potential in preventing the disease, treating active infections, and reducing recurrence. If the trial is successful, IMM-529 could generate projected annual revenues of US$93 million, with possibilities for further market expansion in earlier stages of treatment.
