Ocean Power Technologies secures new contract with Naval Postgraduate School to enhance maritime awareness

Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NYSE-A:OPTT) announced it has secured another contract from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California.

This revenue-generating contract builds on a previous collaboration that integrated AT&T 5G technology into OPT’s PowerBuoy.

The new agreement focuses on enhancing maritime domain awareness by incorporating advanced subsea sensors and OPT’s Merrows suite, which features AI capabilities for seamless platform integration.

The PowerBuoy will provide autonomous, continuous monitoring and data collection in this strategically important maritime area.

This deployment will be part of NPS’s ongoing Field Experimentation exercises, which aim to test and refine technologies that enhance situational awareness and operational efficiency for naval operations.

The PowerBuoy will play a key role by offering a resilient platform for persistent surveillance and secure communications in maritime environments, OPT highlighted.

"Receiving this contract from NPS underscores the growing recognition of our PowerBuoy technology as a vital tool for enhancing maritime security and operational capability above and below the surface," OPT CEO Philipp Stratmann said.

"This collaboration with NPS not only builds on our previous successes but also pushes the boundaries of what autonomous maritime technology can achieve.”

The CEO continued: “We are proud to continue supporting the Joint Force's efforts to advance MDA and secure communication networks. The results from this deployment will also further demonstrate the ability to deploy PowerBuoy’s as 5G communication nodes across the coastline of the United States."

The integrated system is slated for deployment in late fall, pending permit approvals.
