We've had "diabesity"; now here's what "pre-diabesity" means for Novo Nordisk, Eli Lily et al

The surge in GLP-1 obesity-related research is highlighting a critical shift in medical literature, according to a recent analysis by Deutsche Bank.

It notes that managing obesity is becoming increasingly vital, with terms like "diabesity"—the intersection of diabetes and obesity—gaining traction since 2023.

Now, the concept of "pre-diabesity" is emerging, indicating the need for early intervention in individuals at risk of both conditions.

Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO), with its strong obesity franchise, with products such as Ozempic and Wegovy, is poised to benefit from these trends, with Deutsche setting a target price of DKK 1,100 (current price DKK 900).

Its GLP-1 therapies are seen as increasingly critical as the medical community shifts its focus to the early management of weight and related conditions like prediabetes.

The German investment bank highlights that the expanding medical focus on prediabetes further strengthens the market for Novo’s therapies, adding gravitas to the rationale for their use.

Europe's largest pharma company's strong position in the obesity market is bolstered by data from industry peers like Eli Lilly and Co (NYSE:LLY), and the growing acceptance of obesity as a critical health issue.

Deutsche's analysis also emphasises the importance of Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO)’s approach in the broader context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where healthcare innovation, particularly in chronic conditions like obesity and diabetes, is expected to drive significant market growth.

The bank sees the Danish giant's products as crucial in this landscape, with the company's efforts likely leading to increased investor interest and potentially higher stock trading liquidity.

This combination of strong market positioning and growing medical validation could make Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO) a key player in addressing these global health challenges.
