IKEA to take on eBay and Facebook Marketplace with second-hand resale platform

Ikea is to set up its own global second-hand resale platform for people with furniture from the Swedish retailer to sell.

Called Ikea Preowned, the online marketplace is already up and running in Madrid and Oslo, with a global roll-out scheduled for December.

According to the reports, Ikea wants to boost its sustainability profile as well as profit from a growing market for second-half furniture and the success of vendor platforms such as eBay, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and Schpock.

"After December we will evaluate and decide on the next steps. We start in Oslo and Madrid, yet our ambition is higher", a spokesperson told the BBC.

On Ikea Preowned, items are put up by the seller with measurements and the original retail price automatically added for comparison.

Some Ikea stores already run a pre-owned items option.
