British Airways has scrapped several flights due to the impact of Storm Lilian, with some train services also being disrupted.
A Met Office warning for winds of up to 75 mph was in force across northern England, southern Scotland and Wales this morning.
Heavy rain also hit parts of the country with North Wales recording a month’s worth overnight.
In a statement, International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (LSE:IAG)-owned British Airways said: "Due to restrictions imposed by Air Traffic Control at Heathrow Airport as a result of forecast adverse weather tomorrow, we’ve made some minor adjustments to our schedule."
Flights to Rome, Paris, Basel and destinations in the UK were among the fourteen flights cancelled with delays to Toronto, Pittsburgh and Munich.
Gusts of 50-60mph have been seen across the country with Capel Curig in Wales clocking 72 mph.
Two stages at the Leeds Festival were shut down due to the strength of the wind, with tents being blown around though at lunchtime organisers said the worst of the winds had passed.
Early morning train services across the North of the country were also affected with damage to overhead cables affecting services out of Manchester.
Winds of this strength in August are uncommon, BBC Weather said and are expected to ease from now but will replaced by heavy rain in many parts of the country.
Storm Lilian is the twelfth named weather event already this year.
