Scotch whisky boost as Brazil grants protected status

Scotland’s whisky industry has been given a boost after Brazil awarded the product special protected status, giving distilleries better access to the country.

Estimates from the government suggested the new denomination of origin status might be worth as much as £25 million over five years to the sector.

Mark Kent, chief executive of the Scotch Whisky Association, said it was the first foreign product to be granted "denomination of origin status in Brazil since 2019".

"Scotch whisky now sits beside tequila, cognac and champagne with special legal protection.

"This is fundamental to ensure that millions of Brazilians can have confidence in the quality and history of what they're buying."

The Scotch Whisky Association is also urging Rachel Reeves to reverse the 10.1% duty hike imposed by her Tory predecessor in her first Budget on 30 October.
