Market Report August 21: ASX ends flat as tech stocks lead recovery

Proactive's Tylah Tully gives a market wrap for the 21st of August.

The ASX had a volatile session on the 21st of August, initially dropping 0.56% to 7,951 points by 11 am.

However, the Information Technology sector led a recovery in the afternoon, with WiseTech Global surging 18.36% to $111.71 per share.

By the close, the ASX had recovered, ending at 7,998 points, up just one point from Tuesday.

Other tech companies also contributed to the gains, with Megaport up 5.08% to $11.79 per share and DTL shares rising 6.25%.

Sector-wise, Materials increased by 1.53%, while Financials, Utilities, Real Estate, and Healthcare sectors experienced declines ranging from 0.48% to 1.06%.

The Energy sector suffered the most, dropping just over 2%, with significant losses from Woodside Energy Group, Santos, and Yancoal Australia. Despite the mixed results, the ASX has gained 1.89% over the last five trading days and is 1.84% below its 52-week high.
