FTSE 100 opens lower as oil heavyweights Shell and BP slide - Market Report

FTSE 100 opens lower as oil heavyweights Shell and BP slide - Market Report

London's FTSE 100 fell early on, reversing gains seen on Monday during another calm session since global market volatility hit earlier in the month.

Heavyweights Shell and BP were among those weighing on the index early on Tuesday, as each slipped back following a sharp fall in oil prices overnight.

GSK also faced a negative start, despite announcing the FDA had agreed to a fast-track approval process for its new cancer drug being developed alongside China’s Hansoh.

John Wood Group was among those reporting in London on Tuesday, with the engineering firm ticking up after unveiling improved adjusted profits as it undergoes a turnaround plan.

And finally, elsewhere, GoPro announced plans overnight to axe 15% of its workforce following cuts earlier this year in March.
