WH Smith PLC (LSE:SMWH) has launched its first café in its 230 years of history, representing a significant shift in focus away from its traditional book, stationery and magazine business.
Called Smith’s Kitchen, and located in the Princess Anne Hospital, Southampton, the 495 sq ft site, which seats 26, will offer both takeaway and dine-in options.
WH Smith’s move into the food and drink sector came shortly after it introduced its own-brand food range, which includes 30 new products such as sandwiches.
The company intends to expand the Smith’s Kitchen concept to other hospitals as part of its growing focus on providing food-to-go options
“Whether it’s in a hospital or on their journeys, customers tell us that quality food and drink options are what they prioritise most in the different locations we serve,” said Andrew Harrison, WH Smith’s UK travel managing director.
WH Smith’s hospital stores have become one of the fastest-growing areas of its travel business, with more than 140 locations across the UK.
The company’s travel division, which includes airport and railway station outlets, remains the largest segment of its operations.
