HeLIX Exploration PLC (AIM:HEX), a helium exploration and development company, has commenced drilling operations at the Clink #1 well in the Ingomar Dome project area within the Montana Helium Fairway.
The drilling is aimed at testing multiple stacked reservoir targets, including the Amsden, Charles, and Flathead Formations, known for their nitrogen-rich gas deposits.
Clink #1 is the first of a two-well drilling program planned for the third quarter of 2024.
It is expected to take between three to four weeks to drill, after which wireline logging and extended flow tests will be conducted to assess the viability of the gas reservoirs.
"We are delighted to commence drilling at the Clink #1 well on the crest of the Ingomar Dome anticline,” Bo Sears, chief executive of Helix Exploration, stated.
“This well will allow us to fully appraise each target horizon with an extended flow test.
“If successful, the Clink #1 well will be used as a future production well, reducing time and cost to move towards first gas production anticipated before the end of 2025."
The primary target for the Clink #1 well is the Flathead Formation, situated at a depth of 7,410 feet, which is the main helium-producing horizon in the region.
Secondary targets include the Amsden Formation at 3,840 feet and the Charles Formation at 4,780 feet, where historic drilling has identified nitrogen-rich gas, though these formations have not yet been tested for helium.
In addition to Clink #1, Helix Exploration plans to drill the Darwin #1 well at the Rudyard Project later this quarter.
This well will appraise contingent helium resources in a region where helium has been previously proven at target depths between 5,000 and 5,500 feet.
