Graphene Manufacturing Group Ltd (TSX-V:GMG, OTCQX:GMGMF) has provided investors an update on its graphene aluminium-ion battery technology being developed in partnership with the University of Queensland, Australia.
The company said it is currently optimizing its G+AI Battery pouch cell electrochemistry, a standard battery development process step.
The company in February 2024 announced it had produced multiple battery pouch cells with more than 1000 mAh capacity, a major milestone demonstrating the scalability from coin cells to pouch cells.
It is refining battery performance through a weekly “Sprint” process, testing various designs and assembly parameters.
It said the performance of the pouch cells will be reported once it has successfully produced a repeatable and third-party testing 1000 mAh+ battery pouch cell.
The company highlighted that the battery technology readiness level (BTRL) of its graphene aluminium-ion technology remains at level 4.
It anticipates that if it constructs and commissions a pilot plant, it will progress to BTRL 7 and 8 since the equipment and process needed to make the batteries is the same as that used to make lithium-ion batteries.
In terms of the next steps towards commercialization, GMG is exploring market applications for the G+AI Battery in collaboration with global companies, including Rio Tinto.
