Ocean Power Technologies files patent for docking and recharging buoy technology

Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NYSE-A:OPTT) announced it has filed a patent for its docking and recharging buoy technology specifically designed for its Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel (WAM-V) Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV).

The provider of intelligent maritime solutions said its system has already been demonstrated successfully and has the potential to revolutionize the operational efficiency of autonomous marine vessels.

It said the patent-pending docking and recharging buoy will support extended missions and operations in remote ocean environments by allowing OPT’s WAM-V USV to recharge at sea.

This is particularly significant for applications where long-term, autonomous deployment is key, such as oceanographic research, environmental monitoring, and defense.

"The development of this docking and recharging buoy technology is a testament to OPT's commitment to advancing sustainable and innovative ocean technologies," OPT CEO Philipp Stratmann said in a statement.

"By enabling our WAM-V USVs to operate autonomously for extended periods, we are providing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for a wide range of maritime applications."

Investors welcomed the update, sending OPT shares 5.5% higher pre-market on Thursday.
