NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC)’ broad spectrum drug candidate NV-387 could present “a new paradigm shift in viral therapy,” according to a new research report from Zacks Small Cap Research.
NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) has released positive preclinical results for NV-387 in several different viral models, Zacks SCR analyst Dr David Baut highlighted in the report published earlier this week.
He noted that NV-387 was originally designed for COVID-19 but has also seen positive results in RSV, influenza and pox viruses.
“As opposed to currently available antiviral therapies in which each compound is only active against a unique type of virus, NanoViricides has disclosed preclinical results for NV-387 in multiple viral models that demonstrates broad-spectrum action of the compound,” Dr Baut wrote.
“These results could represent a new paradigm in viral therapy."
Bautz highlighted several benefits of NanoViricides’ nanoviricide platform technology, notably its key characteristic that it attacks the virus outside the cell and can also be loaded with antiviral agents to work synergistically inside the cell.
“This is in direct contrast to most other antiviral agents under development that only target the intracellular life cycle of viruses,” he wrote.
Another key advantage is that the drugs can be administered in a variety of routes, including intravenously, orally, or through inhalation.
“For NV-387, the company has tested two oral formulations in the Phase 1 trial: oral gummies and an oral syrup. The company has also developed injectable and inhalation formulations for use in hospitalized patients that are expected to follow into clinical development later,” Bautz wrote.
NanoViricides recently completed a Phase 1 safety study for NV-387, with results expected in the second half of 2024 and a Phase 2 clinical trial in RSV is being planned.
“We look forward to the final results from the Phase 1 clinical trial of NV-387 as well as the company's expected timeline for moving it into a Phase 2 trial in RSV and additional indications that will be pursued," the analyst concluded.
NanoViricides is a development stage company that is creating special-purpose nanomaterials for antiviral therapy.
