Tesco PLC (LSE:TSCO) and J Sainsbury PLC (LSE:SBRY) have continued to strengthen their position as the UK’s largest supermarkets, while rivals Morrisons, Asda and Aldi falter, industry data revealed on Wednesday.
Asda saw its market share drop by 1.1% to 12% in the last year after it experienced a 5.9% drop in sales during the four weeks to July 13, NIQ data showed.
Meanwhile, Morrisons’ share of the market slipped from 8.5% to 8.4% year-on-year.
Aldi, which was one of the fastest-growing supermarkets last year, also experienced a slight contraction in its grip on the industry as its market share slipped to 10.5% from 10.9%.
Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Lidl and Waitrose were all reported to have taken additional shares in the market.
It comes as the total sales in UK supermarkets rallied on the back of a warm end of June and England’s campaign in the Euros.
Revenues during the month rose by 3.6% compared to a 1.1% lift in the four weeks prior.
Mike Watkins at NIQ said: “The three major things that influence how shoppers spend are the weather, events and increased promotional activity.
“In the last few weeks all of these have been in play however, we’ve seen that strong branded promotions around Euro 2024 had the biggest impact at the start of the summer.”
