B&M boosted by store openings as sales edge higher

B&M European Value Retail SA (LSE:BME), the discount retailer, saw its sales edge higher in the first quarter helped by new store openings and volume growth.

Group sales increased by 2.4%, reaching £1,345 million for the 13-week period ending 29 June 2024.

The company's performance was driven by growth across its UK, French, and Heron Foods segments.

In the UK, B&M's revenue grew by 1.5% to £1 billion, while in France it reported a 7.5% increase to £126 million.

Heron Foods, the frozen food supermarket chain, saw its revenue rise 2.7% to £139 million.

However, B&M UK experienced a 3.5% decline in like-for-like sales when including the impact of Easter timing.

Despite this, the company opened 19 new stores in the UK and two in France during the quarter. All newly opened stores are performing ahead of expectations.

Alex Russo, chief executive, said: "The growth fundamentals of our business are strong, with a highly disciplined approach to pricing, product, and high operational standards.

“We continue to offer our customers exceptional value at a time when household incomes are under pressure.”
