Marathon Oil to pay $241.5mln settlement over North Dakota emissions

Marathon Oil Corp (NYSE:MRO) is to pay $241.5 million in a settlement deal with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ), over alleged violations of the Clean Air Act.

It addresses air pollution at the company's oil and gas operations on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota.

The settlement includes a $64.5 million civil penalty, and Marathon will invest $177 million in extensive compliance measures to reduce harmful emissions from 169 facilities across the state.

The EPA and DOJ announced that the settlement would result in over 2.3 million tons of pollution reduction.

Marathon Oil will be required to obtain new permits for its existing and future operations, and implement measures such as flare monitoring and infrared camera inspections to ensure compliance with emissions standards.
