In another blow to the retailer, it has emerged that Gary Mills, a former executive at Tesco and Morrisons, has decided not to join Asda as its interim retail director, a role he was announced for just days ago, according to the Daily Telegraph.
His decision comes after the recent departures of Mark Simpson, the chief transformation officer, and Paul Gillow, the commercial director.
Andrew Staniland, currently Iceland’s group buying director, will replace Gillow next year, overseeing Asda’s fresh and frozen food division.
The leadership changes are part of a major management overhaul led by Asda co-owner Mohsin Issa.
The supermarket chain has been struggling with declining sales, as reported by Kantar, which showed a 4% drop in the 12 weeks leading up to June 9. Asda's market share also fell from 13.7% to 12.8% last year.
Additionally, Asda is seeking a new chief executive with a compensation package of up to £10 million. However, concerns about Issa’s future involvement in the company have led some candidates to withdraw their interest.
