Wetherspoons and other pub groups praying for Euro 2024 England win

JD Wetherspoon PLC (LSE:JDW) update next should show how much of a boost the stuttering run of this England team is having on the pub industry.

England’s next game is tomorrow in a quarter-final against Switzerland and if they win the Three Lions are one game from the final.

Spoons has already predicted that results for the current year will be at the top of market forecasts.

“At the last check, the group was expecting performance to be at the top end of expectations, which at the time meant pre-tax profits of around £75million, says Hargreaves Lansdown.

“The England men’s football team’s arguably fortunate progress in the Euros won’t be doing bar takings any harm, but that may be somewhat offset by the wettest spring since 1986. Investors will be looking out for any further changes to guidance.”

On a more prosaic note, Wetherspoons will also give an update on debt, and investors will want progress on getting that down as well as clarity over future expansion plans.

“This will be key to determining whether a return to the dividend list might be on the table,” suggests Hargreaves.
