Britain is going to splurge more than £6 billion this summer watching live sporting events, new research suggests.
According to a survey from American Express, people intend to spend £3.4 billion on tickets and a further £2.7 billion will go towards food and drink at events.
Pub takings are also expected to rise sharply with 16% of those surveyed expected to watch some form of sport at their local and spend around £400 in total on drinks across the summer.
England’s stuttering progress at the Euro 2024 football tournament is also leading to a surge in upgrades of home entertainment packages and the use of apps and news reports about the games.
Dave Edwards, VP of international card services at American Express, said: “The UK is passionate when it comes to sport and our latest American Express research shows how fans are willing to spend to feel involved in the action.”
