Amazon and Walmart kick off 'discount season'

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT, ETR:WMT) have announced the dates for their respective summer shopping events, aiming to attract consumers with a variety of discounts amid ongoing inflationary pressures.

Walmart's event kicks off on July 8 at 5 pm. Eastern Time and will run until July 11. The retailer promises deals on electronics, home goods, toys, and travel items, with a focus on back-to-school essentials, news site MarketWatch said. Members of Walmart's loyalty program, Walmart+, will have early access to these deals starting at noon on July 8.

Amazon's annual Prime Day is set for July 16 and 17. The e-commerce giant will feature daily deals promoted by influencers, including artist Megan Thee Stallion, who will announce the event dates in a music video, the MarketWatch added.

Amazon plans to offer savings on brands such as Clinique, Allbirds, and Kiehl’s, alongside popular products from Sony, KitchenAid, and Coach. Prime members can expect discounts across more than 35 categories, including electronics, kitchen items, beauty products, and apparel.

The timing of these announcements reflects a competitive push to capture consumer spending during the summer shopping season. Both companies are looking to capitalize on the increased demand for discounts as consumers continue to face higher prices for essentials.
