Over the next four days, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) will be hosting its 84th Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Florida.
The world's largest diabetes meeting, the event will gather together more than 11,000 leading physicians, scientists, researchers and healthcare professionals globally.
The hybrid meeting, held at the Orange County Convention Center and online, will feature more than 200 sessions and 2,000 original research presentations, showcasing the latest scientific advancements in diabetes.
Meeting to tackle big contemporary issues
The ADA's annual meeting aims to highlight cutting-edge developments in diabetes research and care, focusing on key contemporary themes such as obesity, technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative diabetes treatments.
Obesity affects 42% of American adults and contributes to up to 53% of new diabetes cases each year.
The 2024 sessions will present several clinical studies on obesity treatment, including groundbreaking data on glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) drugs such as Ozempic.
The studies explore the impact of GLP-1 drugs on obesity, diabetes, sleep apnea and kidney outcomes, featuring a range of FDA-approved medications.
AI is an important emerging tool in the fight against diabetes, and the sessions will highlight advancements in diabetes management technologies, such as automated insulin delivery (AID) systems and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). These solutions are transforming patient care, offering more personalised and improved outcomes.
Other notable topics at the event include eye health, health disparities, diabetes-related cancers and early risk monitoring.
"This year’s program reflects our dedication to advancing research, fostering innovation, and ultimately improving the lives of those affected by diabetes,” said ADA chief scientific and medical officer Robert Gabbay.
Sessions will be available for on-demand viewing for attendees through August 26.
A global health challenge
Diabetes remains among the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States, with a staggering 1.4 million new cases diagnosed annually.
