Allurion Technologies shares surged more than 145% after it published a study showing lean mass gains and significant weight loss in patients using its weight loss platform the Allurion Program.
Allurion’s weight loss platform features the Allurion Gastric Ballon, a swallowable, procedure-less intragastric balloon for weight loss and includes access to the AI-powered Allurion Virtual Care Suite.
The study showed the patients saw lean mass gains of 5.6% with an average weight loss of 14% or more after four months of using the program, with Allurion highlighting that separate studies of patients using GLP-1 weight loss drugs report an average lean mass loss of 11%.
Patients’ vital signs were tracked in real-time using the Allurion App, Connected Scale, and Health Tracker, and follow-up was provided through the Allurion Virtual Care Suite.
Across three obesity centers, 571 patients reduced their weight by 13.9 kilograms from 97.9 kilograms to 84 kilograms and lean mass increased by 2.8 kilograms from 49.8 kilograms to 52.6 kilograms over four months.
All patients experienced “significant” decreases in body fat percentage from 32.7% to 27.9% over this period.
“Historically, weight loss has come at the expense of lean muscle mass, the maintenance of which is critical to overall health. These results demonstrate just the opposite, providing evidence that it is possible to lose significant amounts of weight while maintaining, and even increasing, lean body mass,” Allurion CEO and founder Dr Shantanu Gaur commented.
“We believe that this data underscores the impact of real-time monitoring of body composition and personalized recommendations through our AI-powered Virtual Care Suite. In fact, we believe that using Allurion’s AI platform with other modalities—including GLP-1s, where muscle mass loss is a significant risk—may be a promising path forward.”
Shares of Allurion had added 146.3% at US$2.62 on Thursday afternoon.
