HIVE Digital Technologies executive Frank Holmes talks profitability post Bitcoin halving

HIVE Digital Technologies (TSX-V:HIVE, NASDAQ:HIVE) has made significant strides in the cryptocurrency mining sector, as executive chairman Frank Holmes recently shared in an exclusive interview with Proactive.

Highlighting the company's performance in May 2024, Holmes discussed Hive's achievement of mining 119 Bitcoin during the month, marking a 3% increase in its Bitcoin holdings to a total of 2,451 BTC.

Holmes emphasized Hive's strategic focus on optimizing operations and announced the acquisition of advanced Bitmain S21 Pro Antminers, enhancing the company's mining capabilities.

Proactive: There's exciting news from the company regarding your production last month. With significant concerns surrounding the 'halving', let's start there. People are wondering how companies will respond to this, and it seems your company has performed admirably. Could you elaborate on that?

Frank Holmes: Well, we were the first company to go public in mining cryptocurrencies. We've experienced both booms and busts, gaining significant insights along the way. One pivotal moment was when we shifted from mining Ethereum, which moved from proof of work to proof of stake, impacting our operations. Despite these challenges, we prepared extensively and made strategic acquisitions during the last halving event four years ago. For us, crises like these present opportunities, and we turned a profit this past month through our mining operations.

Could you explain the impact of the Bitcoin halving on your recent operations?

Certainly. Before April, there were 18,000 nodes validating the Bitcoin network globally, with 900 Bitcoin mined daily. With the halving, this number has reduced to 450 Bitcoin per day. While this adjustment could suggest a 50% revenue decline, it's not the full picture. Despite these challenges, we remain profitable. We are exploring other avenues to expand our margins and boost revenue. I'm pleased to report that in May, we mined 119 Bitcoin, underscoring our resilience and adaptability.

Our HODL position, the amount on our balance sheet, increased by 3%. This translates to a valuation nearing $170 million for our shareholders. We view this as a significant asset, particularly as we prioritize environmentally sustainable practices, including the use of green energy sources for mining. Incorporating these eco-friendly coins into our balance sheet underscores our commitment to sustainability.

HIVE ended May with 2,451 Bitcoin. Additionally, you've announced the acquisition of new machines. This ongoing investment seems crucial for your operations. Could you elaborate on how significant these machines are for your strategy moving forward, Frank?

It’s very much like fracking—initially, you might yield 1,000 barrels a day, but without continuous drilling, that number diminishes over time. Similarly, in our rapidly evolving industry, reinvestment in cutting-edge technology is essential. That's why we're allocating an additional $4 million towards acquiring more efficient energy machines. We'll phase out less efficient models, often selling them to emerging markets where electricity costs are lower. Our goal is to maintain the highest standard of efficiency globally, a commitment reflected in our ongoing monthly upgrades.

With technology advancing rapidly and the Bitcoin mining landscape constantly evolving, how crucial is equipment upgrading for HIVE Digital Technologies (TSX-V:HIVE, NASDAQ:HIVE)?

I think it's critical for anyone in the Bitcoin mining industry to continuously reinvest in both personnel and technology. The rapid evolution of this technology means it typically operates on a two-year cycle, not longer. At HIVE, we've adopted accelerated depreciation over two years instead of the standard four, reflecting our proactive approach to keep pace with technological advancements.
