PyroGenesis Canada Inc. (TSX:PYR, OTCQX:PYRGF) has won C$2.5 million (US$1.8m) of contracts to make a thermal swing adsorption (TSA) system to capture and recover waste gases from a large biofuel project in Quebec.
The contracts, which have been signed by PyroGenesis subsidiary Pyro Green-Gas Inc, are for the engineering, design, and fabrication of the TSA system to be used for the dehydration of pure oxygen produced from electrolyzers at the Varennes Carbon Recycling (VCR) plant currently under construction at the off-island suburb of Montreal.
The C$1 billion VCR initiative, which is led by a consortium including Shell, Suncor and Enerkem, and financially backed by the Quebec and central Canadian governments, is designed to convert up to 200,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste and residual biomass into 125 million liters of chemicals and biofuels, such as methanol, annually.
Pyro Green-Gas expects to complete delivery in the fourth quarter to the biorefinery.
Pyro Green-Gas’ technologies such as TSA and pressure swing adsorption are employed to safely capture and recover CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, explained P. Peter Pascali, president and CEO of PyroGenesis.
“This is crucial to projects like the VCR project, which itself has a stated goal of cutting more than 170,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually and 4.25 million tonnes over the project’s 25-year lifespan.
“This is equivalent to taking 50,000 passenger vehicles off the road, and we look forward to potentially increasing our role as the project evolves.”
Pyro Green-Gas, formerly known as AirScience Technologies, offers technologies and expertise in biogas upgrading and air pollution controls.
They design systems for converting biogas to renewable natural gas, purifying pyrolysis-gas, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from digesters and landfills, part of PyroGenesis's three-tiered solution ecosystem aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel use in heavy industries.
Shares of PyroGenesis had gained 8.8% by midday in Toronto.
