After Apple confirmed a partnership with OpenAI to roll out artificial intelligence-powered features in its smartphones, Tesla and X.com boss Elon Musk threatened to ban the devices from his companies.
The iPhone maker announced various ways that AI technology will be incorporated into apps and the iOS operating systems, rolling out ‘Apple Intelligence’ in devices, including integrating ChatGPT into iPhones via Siri.
Apple promised that many workloads will be done on-device without the need to share user data, and a ‘private cloud compute’ will be available if there is need for more computational power.
Musk said in a series of posts on X that Apple devices “will be banned at my companies” if ChatGPT is integrated at the operating system level, as it is “an unacceptable security violation”.
He said: “Apple has no clue what's actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They're selling you down the river."
Shares in Apple fell 1.9% on the day and in premarket trading on Tuesday were down another 0.3% to $192.60.
