Fiona Harvey has filed a £133 million lawsuit against Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX, ETR:NFC), alleging defamation and other claims related to the portrayal of a character inspired by her in the hit drama series 'Baby Reindeer'.
The lawsuit, filed in California, accuses Netflix of intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and violations of her right of publicity.
'Baby Reindeer', created by and starring Richard Gadd, depicts Gadd's alleged experiences with a stalker.
Harvey, who publicly identified herself as the series' inspiration, denies stalking Gadd or sending him thousands of emails and messages.
In a recent interview, she stated: “I don’t think I sent him anything. There may have been a couple of emails, jokey banter, but that is it.”
Harvey claims Netflix misrepresented her as a convicted stalker, damaging her reputation.
She is seeking damages for mental anguish, loss of business, and profits from the series. Netflix intends to defend the case, standing by Gadd’s right to tell his story.
