Tesco PLC (LSE:TSCO) has launched a new online marketplace which will give customers the chance to purchase third-party products while they do their weekly shop.
It is part of a wider plan to make Tesco.com “a one-stop shop for everything customers need,” the supermarket explained.
Some 9,000 products will be listed on the newly launched marketplace and will include item categories such as garden, DIY, homeware, toys and pet care.
While the products will appear alongside Tesco groceries online and on the app, the orders will be fulfilled by third-party suppliers.
“Ultimately it all boils down to wanting to give our customers access to more than we carry,” Peter Filcek at Tesco told the Grocer.
“We were looking at customer searches on our websites and we found things that we just don’t carry in Tesco [stores] or online, and so that prompted a stream of thinking around what we could do to open up that range.”
Around 17 sellers, which are vetted by Tesco prior, will list brands such as Tefal, Charles Bentley and Silentnight on the marketplace.
Sellers will be monitored on their delivery speeds, returns, delivery success rates as well as customer ratings and reviews.
