TikTok taps former Warner Bros counsel as US ban looms

TikTok owner ByteDance has appointed former Warner Bros general counsel John Rogovin to lead its internal legal department following the departure of Erich Andersen.

Rogovin comes in at a crucial time for ByteDance as US lawmakers move to ban the social media app if the China-based group refuses to divest its US operations.

ByteDance, in May, asked a US federal court to overturn the new law banning the app, arguing it convenes the country's constitution on several grounds.

US lawmakers want to ban the massively popular platform over fears that Beijing is using it to access users’ personal data.

The law, supported by US President Joe Biden, aims to force the divestiture by January 19, 2025.

TikTok received an unlikely supporter in Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who this week joined the app and quickly amassed three million followers.

Trump attempted to ban TikTok when he was President but has since criticised attempts to limit the app, saying this would strengthen Facebook and Instagram parent Meta Platforms.

He previously called Facebook the "enemy of the people".
