Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) announced Monday it will spend $3.2 billion to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in Sweden over two years.
Microsoft said it would add 20,000 graphics processing units at its three Swedish data centers located in Sandviken, Gavle and Staffanstorp.
It will use Nvidia’s processors and may turn to semiconductors from AMD and eventually some of its own chips, Microsoft president Brad Smith said in an interview.
The company also plans to train 250,000 Swedes with AI skills within organizations, schools, universities, the public sector and beyond over three years.
Further, Microsoft is investing in renewable energy and has acquired nearly 1,000 MWs.
“This large investment reflects our belief in how much Sweden can benefit from AI,” Smith said.
Sweden and the other Nordic countries have become key target areas for energy-intensive infrastructure due to their abundance of clean energy, dominated by hydropower.
Google-owner Alphabet and Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta Platforms already have large facilities in the region.
