Genflow Biosciences PLC (LSE:GENF, OTCQB:GENFF) has received €381,434 from a research grant provided by the Government of Wallonia in Belgium.
This grant is non-diluting and non-reimbursable, meaning Genflow does not have to pay it back or give up any company ownership.
Genflow and its partner, Revatis, have started a three-year project to research sarcopenia, a condition that causes muscle loss with age. The remaining funds from the grant will be released over the next two years.
The Sarcopenia Project focuses on developing muscle progenitor cells (MPCs) loaded with Genflow's SIRT6 gene.
MPCs are stem cells that can turn into muscle cells, helping with muscle repair.
In sarcopenia, MPC activity and numbers decrease, harming muscle regeneration.
By enhancing MPCs with the SIRT6 gene, Genflow aims to improve muscle regeneration and combat ageing effects on muscles.
"Genflow aims to counteract the detrimental effects of ageing on muscle tissue with our Sarcopenia program, which holds potential for significantly improving the quality of life for older adults affected by muscle loss and weakness," said CEO, Dr Eric Leire.
