NanoViricides CEO says lead asset NV-387 could be ‘holy grail’ of antiviral medicines

NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) CEO Dr Anil Diwan told investors that, if approved, its antiviral drug candidate NV-387 could be “as revolutionary an antiviral agent as penicillin was as an anti-bacterial agent.”

The pharmaceutical company is developing a first-in-class, broad-spectrum anti-viral agent NV-387 that it believes could revolutionize the treatment of viral infections including RSV, COVID, and influenzas.

"An antiviral agent with an extraordinarily broad spectrum of antiviral activity, coupled with strong safety, is a ‘holy grail' of antiviral medicines," Diwan said in a statement from the company.

"Our host-mimetic, direct-acting, nanoviricide platform technology capable of destroying virus particles has made this possible, we believe.”

The company is progressing NV-387 into Phase 2 studies with the goal of achieving regulatory approvals for the drug in various viral infections worldwide.

It has collected evidence from lethal viral infection animal studies that NV-387 demonstrates strong antiviral activity against a range of different virus families, either exceeding or matching the activity of approved drugs.

A Phase 1 trial of NV-387 oral syrup and NV-387 oral gummies was completed without any adverse events reported.

NanoViricides is awaiting reports from the Contract Research Organization that carried out the study to further elaborate on these findings.

Shares of NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) traded 9.5% higher at US$2.41 in pre-market trade on Wednesday.
