Bloomberg to open wave of new data centres in AI push

Bloomberg plans to open a whole wave of new data centres aimed at del enough computing capabilities ahead of introducing its new AI offerings.

A horde of new AI-related tools will be implemented into the New York company’s software, particularly for its financial terminals, which traders use across the globe.

The Evening Standard quoted Shawn Edwards, chief technical officer at Bloomberg, as saying: “We’re definitely building more data centres.

“We’re buying tons and tons of the latest GPU systems and building them up as fast as we possibly can.

“Really what’s to change now is we have to build them liquid cooled instead of air cooled. These GPUs and systems are very different from tradition compute, they’re much more dense and they’re much more power hungry.”

AI upgrades are expected to make the terminals more accurate at crawling through millions of financial documents, while new language-based commands will be added to make it easier to ask questions.

Edwards added: “The nature of data is it’s increasing exponentially and humans just can’t keep up with all their data. We need to build the systems to make it easier for them.

“But we also want to be able to allow people to do insightful research and insightful model building that they can use for their investment thesis and their investment processes.”
