Starmer on July election: ‘Together we can stop the chaos’

Labour leader Kier Starmer has responded to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s July election announcement with a call to “stop the chaos”.

"A vote for Labour is a vote for stability – economic and political. A politics that treads more lightly on all our lives. A vote to stop the chaos," said Starmer.

He pledged to “reset both our economy and our politics so that they once again serve the interests of working people”.

Starmer positioned NHS waiting times and education as key policy battlegrounds.

On the hot-button migration issue, Starmer said Labour would “secure our borders with a New Border Security Command”.

Announcing the election outside Number 10 this afternoon, Sunak said of Labour: "I don't know what they offer - and in truth, I don't think you do either.”

Sunak pledged to “prove to you a Conservative government led by me will not put our economic stability at risk”.
