Rishi Sunak confirms July election; ‘Who do you trust?’ he asks voters

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has officially confirmed a July election in a statement outside Downing Street.

It follows a day of intense speculation over an early election, which will see Labour attempt to return to power after 14 years in opposition.

"Who do you trust?" Sunak asked rhetorically, touching on the Covid-19 pandemic, "war returning to Europe as Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine", migration and the cost-of-living crisis.

"Economic stability is the bedrock of any success," claimed Sunak.

On the opposition, Sunak said: "I don't know what they offer - and in truth, I don't think you do either.”

“I will prove to you a Conservative government led by me will not put our economic stability at risk," he added.

Voters will have their say on 4 July.
